Getting started

What is the difference between Bitcoin and memecoins?

Bitcoin is a monetary asset with a fixed issuance schedule, enormous liquidity, and more than fifteen years of continuous operation. A memecoin is a token whose entire value is the attention on its narrative right now. Both are volatile and neither is safe, but they are different asset classes and sizing them the same way is a mistake.

The differences that matter for trading

  • Liquidity. Bitcoin absorbs very large orders with little impact. A memecoin can be moved several percent by a modest one.
  • Survival. Bitcoin's base rate of still existing next year is high. For a given memecoin it is low, and that should dominate your sizing.
  • Supply. Bitcoin's issuance is fixed and public. A memecoin's supply may still be mintable, and often a few wallets hold most of it.
  • What moves it. Macro conditions and flows on one side; a narrative and who is currently paying attention on the other.

What they share

Both are volatile, both can fall hard, and neither is a savings account. Bitcoin has had multiple drawdowns exceeding 70 percent. The difference is not that one is risk-free, it is that one has a floor argument somebody can make and the other does not.
