Solana & memecoins

What is Solana and why is it popular for memecoins?

Solana is a high-throughput blockchain with sub-second block times and transaction fees measured in fractions of a cent. That combination is why memecoin trading concentrated there: a strategy that takes many small positions and exits quickly is arithmetically impossible on a chain where each transaction costs several dollars and confirms in twelve seconds.

The two numbers that decide everything

  • Fees. A fraction of a cent per transaction means a 20 dollar position is viable. At 4 dollars a transaction it is not, and the entire small-size, high-frequency style disappears.
  • Latency. Sub-second slots make it possible to react to somebody else's trade while the price is still close to theirs. Copy trading in particular is a latency game, and twelve-second blocks lose it.

The launchpad effect

Cheap blockspace made one-click token creation practical, and launchpads turned issuing a token into a form measured in seconds. The result is thousands of new tokens a day and a permanent supply of fresh charts. That is what a trader means by 'the trenches': the top of the funnel, where almost everything fails and the failures are cheap.

The trade-offs, honestly

  • Priority fees. Cheap does not mean free during congestion, and a default fee arrives late in exactly the moments that matter.
  • Failed transactions. On a fast-moving token some transactions simply do not land. Normal, and worth budgeting for.
  • Volume of noise. Thousands of launches a day means the filtering problem is now the whole problem.
